Ask anyone in Kenya who learned to knit at school what yarn they used, and the answer is nearly always a ball that was spun here. Kenyan yarn has dressed generations in school jumpers, and it is still the best value on our shelves.
We stock imported yarn from Turkey, France and India, and we are proud of that range. But for a first project, a school order or a big blanket on a budget, the yarn we point people to is very often made a few hours up the road.
Why knit with Kenyan yarn
The price
From KES 80 a ball, you can practise, make mistakes and start again without worrying about the cost.
Easy to match
Run short halfway through a jumper and the same shade is usually on the shelf.
Hard-wearing
These acrylics are made for school uniforms, so they stand up to daily wear and regular washing.

The yarn we teach with
Spin-Knit Robin Chunky
KES 200 a ball
Robin is spun by Spin-Knit in Nakuru, who have been making yarn since 1982. It is the yarn we give to people learning to knit and crochet, because it is thick enough to see every stitch clearly, smooth enough not to split, and cheap enough that pulling out a row costs you nothing. With 51 shades, there is a colour for everyone.

Best for warm, fast knits
Seal Chunky
KES 200 a ball
A generous 100 g ball of chunky acrylic that knits up fast on 5 to 6 mm needles. This is the one for a jumper to wear in Limuru in July, or a throw for the sofa that will be finished before the cold season ends.

Kenana Knitters wool and cotton
Wool from KES 650 · Cotton from KES 600
This is yarn with a story in every skein. Kenana Knitters is a group of rural women in Njoro who spin organic wool and cotton by hand, on spinning wheels built from recycled bicycle wheels, and colour it with dyes made from plants. No two skeins are quite the same, which is exactly why knitters love them. Choose it for a shawl, a hat or a gift that deserves a yarn with character.

With any yarn, colour can vary slightly from one dye lot to the next. Buy all the balls you need at once, and one extra if you can, so your jumper is the same shade from cuff to collar.
