The companies that make the fabric on our shelves also employ designers to create patterns for it, and they give many of those patterns away. Robert Kaufman alone lists close to two thousand quilt and sewing projects on its website.
That is a lot to scroll through, so we have picked the best for beginners and for the kind of things people in Kenya actually make: cushions, aprons, bags, pillowcases, Christmas makes and simple quilts.
Good to know before you download
The patterns are free PDFs for personal use. You may not resell them or the printed pattern.
They are American, so sizes are in inches and fabric in yards. One yard is 91.4 cm; one of our half metres is a little over half a yard. Our fabric chart explains how to convert.
Each pattern is designed around a particular fabric collection, which may not be on sale yet or may be sold out. Any good quilting cotton works; choose the colours you love.
Patterns made only from Kona solids are the easiest to recreate, because Kona colours stay in production for years.

Sarah's Weekend Rag Quilt
A rag quilt has its seams on the outside, snipped so they fray into a soft, fluffy texture. Imperfect seams disappear, which makes it ideal for a first quilt. Designed for cotton flannel.

Robert Kaufman's free quilt patterns page has the full collection. On each project page, look for the download link; some projects show "coming soon", which refers to the fabric, not the pattern.
Benartex, the other mill we stock, also shares patterns on its patterns page. It mixes free and paid patterns: the free ones are marked FP.
