We have already shown you where to find free DMC patterns. But a pattern is only half the story — you also need to know the stitches.
The good news: DMC teaches every one of them for free, with clear video. As an official DMC stockist, here is how to use their tutorials.
The free video library
DMC's video tutorials and illustrated step-by-step stitch diagrams cover the lot: how to start a cross stitch, how to read a chart, and every individual embroidery stitch — satin, stem, back, chain, and the famous French knot. They also cover knitting, crochet and macramé basics.
A sensible learning order
- Cross stitch: watch how to start, how to read a chart, then stitch a simple beginner pattern.
- Embroidery: learn five core stitches (running, back, stem, satin, French knot) and you can follow most beginner designs.
Two questions always come up, and we have answered both: how many strands of floss to use, and our full embroidery for beginners guide.
What to practise with
A few skeins of DMC floss, a piece of Aida or plain cotton, a hoop and a needle is all you need. Browse our full DMC range.
