A Norwegian knitting thimble is a yarn guide worn on the finger that carries the working yarn. Several separate eyes or channels hold two or more yarns apart and feed them at a consistent tension, so the colours do not twist around each other as you knit.
It is the traditional tool for stranded knitting, Fair Isle and Norwegian colourwork, where two yarns are carried across the same row. Keeping the yarns separated gives more even floats on the reverse and more consistent stitch tension on the front.
