An 8.5 inch embroidery hoop mounted on a flat wooden board. The board tucks under your leg while you sit, holding the hoop steady at a working angle and leaving both hands free above and below the fabric.
Two-handed stitching is faster and more even, and it is essential for some techniques, including goldwork, ribbon embroidery, stumpwork and tambour work. A lap frame also takes the strain off the wrist and shoulder on long stitching sessions, which a hand-held hoop does not.
