For setting a crease without getting up to find the iron.
You press the seam allowance open or folded with the tool instead of your thumbnail, which gives a sharper line and does less damage to your hand. Shaped to sit in either hand, with a dimple on top for a fingertip.
Foundation piecing, patchwork and appliqué are where it earns its place: all three involve pressing a great many small seams at the machine.
