Soft leather with a dimpled metal coin set into the tip.
The leather moulds to your finger so you can still feel the fabric. The coin gives the needle something hard to push against, and the dimples stop it skidding off. That combination is why hand quilters tend to end up with this style rather than an all-metal thimble.
